Chinese New Year

Chinese New year falls on January the 31st 2014. This year it is the year of the horse, many people will travel to and from Hong Kong over the next few weeks to see family and to celebrate the year of the horse. The official travel season for this occasion started on the 16th of January. The government is estimating that over the next forty days over three billion trips will be made by people by every mode of transport possible.

Many of the trips will be made to rural parts of the country, although there is not much country any more, with the majority of the area being urban due to mass migration over the years, non the less there are still a few rural towns that people grew up in and over the festive period will be visited. Unfortunately throughout this extremely busty period and with billions of people all packed in together travelling, virus are also easily passed. Precautions are already taking place in Hong Kong to prevent a mass outbreak of viruses over the next forty days. Blood tests will be carried out on both imported and local poultry, this will then let the government know if they have the virus. If there are any birds that do have a confirmation of the virus will be killed to prevent the virus spreading.

The bird flu virus that is found in birds can be passed on to humans and it can be fatal. With so many people about to descend on Hong Kong an outbreak could be uncontrollable if precautions were not put in to place at an early date, such as now. Immigration is up plus the new year means that the population will be much more than at any other time of the year.

Hong Kong do not want t dampen the mood but do have a responsibility to use precautions and therefore hopefully preventing an outbreak occurring.

Health experts are watching closely for any development and warning signs. A lot of cases occurring between people who have had no direct contact with the birds or anything contaminated or if several members of the same family fall ill and it appears that they have passed the diseases on to each other. This would be a major cause for concern. So far this year there has only been one family suffer with the disease so far this winter.
