Hong Kong couple save countless babies of migrants

Hong Kong baby of migrants

And elderly couple in Hong Kong have selflessly saved the lives of hundreds of abandoned babies over the years, for no profit, no fame and no thanks. They do it, simply, because they are able and because they want to. This is the caring and generous attitude so wide spread in this Asian country.

The couple began their mission in their 30’s and are now aged nearly 70. They were deeply affected by the countless stories and images of abandoned newborn babies on the streets of Hong Kong and China. Many of whom had come from Chinese migrants into Hong Kong whom in their own country have to adhere to a strict one child policy. They usually favour boys to carry the family name and so the majority of the babies abandoned are little girls.

Many desperate mothers in the situation where they cannot afford to keep their child, or are unable to by law, are too ashamed and frightened to hand their babies into an agency face to face and the couple realised this was becoming an issue that was widely unaddressed.

With their own money they began their own orphanage, but people did not come and babies continued to be abandoned. They realised anonymity was needed to make their haven utilised and to prevent the many deaths of these vulnerable newborns left alone on the streets. So they introduced a brand new scheme, unique only to their establishment. It is a hatch in a wall. The hatch is warm, it is sheltered and comfortable and clearly signed from the outside of the building. It is a place where these women, mostly migrants into Hong Kong, can leave their babies knowing that they will be safe. Once a baby is placed in the hatch an alarm will alert the couple to go to the babies aid and this prevents any body outside the building gaining access to the babies before the couple do. Many mothers will leave notes or keepsakes which the couple honour by keeping documented for the child.

The babies stay with the couple until a suitable family is found to adopt them. Inside the orphanage is fun, laughter, warmth and love. They give the children a chance, a fighting chance at a decent life.

Recently their story was brought to light by the powers of social media in a heart warming video of the couples humble beginnings, their plight to help and their success at doing so and the video ends with the loving image of the elderly couple swamped by a circle of giggling, well fed and loved children whom without this Hong Kong man and wife team who knows what could have happened to them.
