US work visas have been in the limelight for various reasons over the past couple of years. The main headlines have surrounded large businesses putting pressure on the US Government to increase the number of H-1B visas, but now they are finding their way into the news for different reasons. In what can only be described as peculiar, the first US work visa has been offered to a professional video game player.

A flood of US work visas to follow?

While the ‘lucky’ recipient, Danny “Shiphtur” Le of Edmonton, Canada, was only granted exceptional immigration status, the move could see further applications of this type passed, and will almost definitely see applications increase. There have long been calls from the video game market to allow special US work visas to players who regularly travel all over the world to play in major tournaments, but until now, obtaining a visa, especially in the US, has been impossible.

Danny “Shiphtur” Le has been issued a full working visa by the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services. Now, even though at the moment this is a one-off case, Le is one of the top international gamers on League Of Legends, a huge online fantasy game with more than 32 million worldwide players, so there might be some way to go before these visas are commonplace, but the first steps have clearly been taken.

Le was granted a visa after he proved that there was just cause for him to be issued one on special grounds. With a grand prize of $1 million for the winning team, and with one of the rules that a team has to be together to qualify, Le debated he should be offered a temporary visa on the same grounds that they are offered to sports professionals.

You think that’s a strange application?

While the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services would have seen this as a strange application, it is by no means the weirdest working application to be filed in the US. A British man once filed a working application to the US stating that he worked as a dog food tester while a woman from France listed her job as a professional foot model when trying to get into the US.

While there have been some strange applications, the fact that a professional gamer has now been issued with a US work visa will most likely cause an influx of applications.
