Fall in numbers of Indian students attending UK Universities

A survey carried out by Times Higher Education has discovered that there has been a fall of 8% in the number of Indian postgraduate applications for places in UK institutions for the current academic year. This compares with Chinese students who have seen an increase of 6%.
Oxford University
The fall has been blamed on the government's scrapping of the right to post-study work visas in April 2012. This option was seen as especially attractive to students who wanted to earn money from their degree in the UK. Especially as many had loans to repay after their studies. Any student who wishes to stay after their degree must now apply for an employment visa and must earn in excess of £20,000 each year.
Getting a visa once study has been completed has also become harder with applicants needing to pass English language tests and they must show they are genuine applicants. It is thought that these factors will lead to even fewer visas being granted in the coming year.
It has been suggested by UK universities that the impact on numbers has actually come from the way the new rules have been reported in the Indian press and this has put students off unnecessarily.
