Australia Immigration

Australia needs to keep its yearly permanent immigration goal at 190,000, the Australian Financial Review Infrastructure Summit has been said. In March 2019, Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison cut the Australia immigration goal to 160,000 per year, to satisfy the Australian voters bothered about job security and overcrowding in cities.

Australian Financial Review Report Explains Necessity of Immigration

But Australia is suffering from a potential labor-supply crisis as 2 million Baby Boomers are leaving from the workforce; the Australian Financial Review report announced Peter McDonald, Demography professor at the University of Melbourne, as speaking. As per the professor, the retiring workforce is not going to be substituted with young people, because the strength of the young people is not growing. The young people are flat and even dropping because people are staying in education is higher. So migration is the unique practical solution to that it apparently would have been better to maintain at 190,000, he said.

The professor besides noted that the decline in the target of Australia immigration had not produced any variation in the overcrowding faced by Melbourne and Sydney. Plenty of the Baby Boom generation who will be leaving soon, are in less skilled jobs. If migrants do not fill these jobs, Australia will also encounter a deficit of lower-skilled workers.

Australia has set the permanent migration at 160,000 for the following 4 years. Intending to drive migrants away from extremely populated cities such as Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, the Australian government, was also starting new skilled-worker visas. These visas, comprising 23,000 entrants, demand the candidates to have 3 years residence in the Australia regional areas as a precondition for obtaining permanent residency.

The 160,000 cap covers 110,000 skilled workers and also 47,000 family members of primary immigrants. Currently, 101,419 appeals are pending in the category of skilled worker and another 194,908 in the category of family migration, and it includes 80,539 partners appealing for residency. Several of these applicants are now in Australia on bridging visas. Australia is meeting a tremendous demand for skilled workers.
