Students migrating to UK

Over the weekend of January 18th it was reported in the United Kingdom’s media that the Prime Minister, David Cameron, is planning to strip welfare handouts to immigrants who are unable to speak English. Also yesterday date the 21st January, in a further attempt to reduce the size of the welfare bill Government ministers announced that unemployed immigrants will be denied housing benefit.

The whole country has seen massive benefit reforms in recent months with changes to benefits across the board, there’s been cut downs of payments and criteria to meet the eligibility for benefits has been tightened. As well as this the government are adding many more criterias for migrants into the UK, such as the latest suggestion of being able to speak the English language.

Though this will undoubtedly cause controversy it is nothing new for many other migration destinations such as Australia and America where this criteria is a must. In the U.S and Australia to migrate there you need to have a satisfactory level of the English language and this is discovered by applicants of Visa’s undertaken a language test, the applicant must score of 60% in this test for their application to be considered. In the U.S applicants also undergo and American history test.

Migrants are welcomed into the UK and have been for many years but it has come to a point where the UK government have to curb this issue. A staggering 140 migrants enter the country each day in Britain and this is becoming a huge problem for the island. Those migrants who are not here to work are a drain on resources, our resources that are funding by the taxpayer and all the prominent members of Parliament agree that something needs to give.

If a migrant does not speak the English language it is highly probable that they are going to face much difficulty in finding employment from a British employer. This means that being unemployed is a high possibility and thus benefits and welfare will be the option.

Tightening up the UK’s immigration system will not be seen as a bad thing by the citizens of the country with a recent tabloid survey from the English 'Guardian' revealing that 77% want the issue of migration addressed and curbed.

In other countries such as Australia and applicant also needs to have sufficient funds to prove that they can support themselves after the migration process, or they need a family sponsor, employer sponsor as proof that their financial needs will be taken care of and they will not need to use public resources. Maybe, this will be the next step for the United Kingdom?
