Controversy Over UK
Recently in the public eye there has been many debates sparked by the UK authorities spot checks of members of the public at UK train stations to check their immigration status with people claiming it is a racist and invasive way to carry out government orders. Spot checks are greatly needed, of that there is no doubt, but if their were tighter immigration rules and stricter UK border entry systems then these spot checks would not have to be so frequent and cause such controversy, many see it as locking the stable gate after the horse has bolted, meaning it is now too late to control the mass of illegal migrants within the UK today.

Mark Harper who is the UK’s Immigration Minister has spoken out to say that despite the protests regarding these spot checks they are most definitely set to continue, people’s discomfort, delays and annoyance will always be of much lower priority that keeping the UK safe and afloat. Many members of the public of ethnic origin have claimed that during spot checks they were a part of they saw not a single white person being stopped and all those searched were of colour. This has been profusely denied and colour is said to not come into it when UK Immigration Staff decide who to spot check and who do not, it is entirely based on a persons behaviour and intelligence the authorities have and any tip offs received.

The mother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence who was killed during a racist attack in the 1990’s has spoken of how she feels the spot checks are entirely racist and that those stopped are 80% more likely to be of caribbean or mexican origin statistics have revealed, she says ‘’Is hauling black people off a train really the way Britain should be in 2014?’’ Her sons death shocked the country and racism is something which has been illegal in the UK for many years with discrimination a criminal offence.

UK Immigration officials have said that no spot checks are due to anything other than trying to protect the country from illegal immigrants who could potentially pose a huge threat, the spot checks have been entirely successful with on August 1st 2013 being a prime example, that say saw 77 people stopped and checked for official documents, of those 17 were arrested and 6 deported back to their homelands due to immigration offences.
