Common Passport Launched for Free Movement of People - Africa

Aimed to facilitate free movement of people in the whole continent… a common passport was launched during the 27th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly at the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC) in Rwanda.  The summit called for Unity and love for the continent.  

Starting in July 2016,   the Twenty of Heads of State and Government kicked off the summit. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, handed over the first passports to Idriss Deby (Chairperson of the AU and President of the Republic of Chad) and Paul Kagame (President of the Republic of Rwanda) 

After receiving the first passport, Idriss Deby said “I feel deeply and proudly a true son of Africa after receiving this passport” and stressed the importance of the integration process in the African continent, to achieve economic growth and social well-being of the people. 

Another important decision taken by the African leaders, occurred on July 16th, during the Ministerial retreat. The leaders emphasized the need for the whole continent to finance itself and work on peace and security missions. 

H.E. Mr. Idriss Deby thanked Rwanda for hosting the Summit. I In his profound speech he said that “Our Union is facing emergency issues on a daily basis. These issues require instant and effective mechanisms to address them.” He also emphasized on protecting human rights and prioritizing focus on Women’s rights. This summit will help to deal with issues, by exchange of views to provide best possible solutions for the continent. 

The event took place in the presence of the Heads of State of the African Union (AU), the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, the Deputy Chairperson, the Palestinian President, the AU Commissioners, Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Members of the Permanent Representative Committee (PRC), officials of the AUC, Heads of AU Organs, the Media and invited guests.
