We are delighted that the M.A.C suggests adding mechanical engineering to the Shortage Occupation List, announced by Peter Finegold, IMechE education and skills head. Despite providing £1.23tn to the UK’s entire turnover, the industry of engineering holds a persistent skills shortage.
Given that 90 percent of engineers in the UK are male and tend to develop from a comparatively weak social background. The sector needs to do more to challenge and improve the culture, hold the proportionate women engineers in a high number who leave the profession in the career beginning itself and support more people who do not meet the engineering archetype to enter and then continue in the profession.
Mechanical engineering secures 24th place on the M.A.C’s shortage indicators ranking. The vacancy rate of professions has been continuously above average, said by the government body.
Today’s labor market is very contrary to the one that M.A.C. examined when the last S.O.L. was announced in the year 2013. Unemployment is less and organizations in various industries are encountering challenges in finding skilled individuals to fill their jobs, told Alan Manning, M.A.C. chairman professor.
That is why M.A.C has suggested developing the S.O.L. to cover a range of professions in information, health, and engineering fields.
However, M.A.C suggestions are only relevant below the modern immigration system, while E.U. free movement continues. Recommending a full analysis of the S.O.L. once there is a clear picture of what the planned immigration system will look like.
