Citizenship and Immigration Minister of Canada
Chris Alexander, Citizenship and Immigration Minister of Canada will travel to Shanghai and Hong Kong this week to show and highlight the opportunities that exist for Chinese students, travelers and business persons.

A strong relationship continues to flourish  between China and Canada. In the year 2013, over 2,70,000 visitor visas were granted to the Chinese travelers and nearly 34,000 Chinese people became permanent residents of Canada. Over the past 15 years, China is the main source country for permanent residents to Canada and it indicates the strong people to people relationship that links the two countries. 

During his visit to China, Chris Alexander will highlight the government’s efforts to build a flexible and fast immigration system that acts in accordance with Canada’s labor and economic market requirements. The minister will also talk about future and current pathways to permanent residency, which are available to students, businesses, families who are willing to study, settle and do business in the country. 

Minister Alexander in Hong Kong, will meet the Secretary for Security for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Lai Tung-kwok, prior to laying wreaths at the Sai Wan Cemetery, the grave place of the 280 Canadian soldiers who have made sacrifices. 

In Shangai, Chris Alexander will particularly concentrate on international education. In the year 2013, almost 29,000 students from China came to Canada, marking the 5th successive year, highlighting the fact that China is the top source country to Canada for international students. Alexander will participate in various events in Shangai such as delivering a speech at China International Education Exhibition Tour education fair and Fudan University before returning to Canada. And he will also attend events at the Shanghai University of International Business and Economics and at the Shanghai Redleaf Women's Hospital to commemorate programs of collaboration, in finance and nursing, and between these institutions and British Columbia's Douglas College.
