Canadian Visa Strike Over

October 2013, 11
EMAIL  Print A+
Following four months of strike action, immigration officers in Canada have finally reached agreement with the Canadian government over their pay and gone back to work. The resulting backlog of visa application will now be processed as quickly as possible.

The strike began in June 2013 and were a series of one day strikes at Canadian visa centres around the world, including in China, India and Mexico. The strikes were based on the fact that immigration staff at these consulates and embassies were paid less than staff in Canada.

However it was argued that staff stationed in these countries were given allowances and perks to make up for the lower pay. The strikes led to concerns about students missing the start of the academic year and issues with the Vancouver and Montreal film festivals.

A deal has now been struck and pay is to be backdated to 2011 and the deal has been approved. Union members have been recommended to accept the deal.
