The Immigration level seen in the fourth quarter of 2017 was very high in recent years.

Major factor

International migration is a major factor in the high growth rate of population. The figures of Statistics Canada for the final quarter of 2017 show that 70 percent of the increase, was owing to immigrants.

The contributing factors were international migration, return migration and persons who are not permanent residents.

The statistics

In this period, the population increased by 78,805, or 0.2 percent. Among them, 55,048 or 69 percent was because of increase in international migration. This increase is uncommon and high level for the fourth quarter. This strong growth has happened in the fourth quarter after a long time. Presently, the figures of the demographic accounting system are available only from July 1971.

Canada has gained 2,087 persons who are not permanent residents in this period. Most of them belong to the refugees.

The figure for Net emigration loss is 12,578 persons. This number is subtracted from the total of immigration, returning persons, emigration, and persons who are not permanent residents. It has the use to know the increase in international migration.

International migration is a major reason for the increase in the population of Yukon province.

In every Canadian province, there was an increase in population in the fourth quarter of 2017. The fact is same in Manitoba, Quebec, Ontario, and Yukon which is not only rare but also strong. Because of the International migration, the decrease in population in Prince Edward Island has been covered. There were more deaths than births in New Brunswick but did not have an impact on the net increase.

Persons who are not permanent residents have played a major role in the increase seen in British Columbia, Quebec, and Manitoba. Quebec has seen 3,078 new non-permanent residents in this period.
