The Government of Canada will enhance foreign credential recognition for ten more key occupations including professions in the skilled trade and healthcare.

Jason Kenney, Canada's Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister for Multiculturalism and Chris Alexander, Canada Citizenship and Immigration Minister, have made this announcement.

The ten new key professions incorporate geoscientists, electricians, welders, audiologists, midwives, psychologists, lawyers, carpenters, heavy equipment operators, speech language pathologists and heavy duty equipment technicians.

Minister Kenney elucidated that the selection of skilled trade occupations was made as they are in great demand in various sectors and provinces of the Canada, whereas health care professions were selected as they aid in addressing skills shortages and foster the living standards of Canadians.

These professions form a part of a national framework and mainly intends to fast-track foreign credential recognition for main occupations. Service standards have been set up for the priority occupations so that foreign trained professionals can get their qualifications evaluated in less than one year throughout the Canada.

Kenney said that the government mainly focuses on creating jobs, developing the economy and maintaining long-term prosperity. They identified that skilled new entrants will fill shortages in chief occupations thereby contributing to the economic growth through their skills. Therefore, the government intends to accelerate the foreign credential recognition for ten additional priority occupations including the skilled trades and healthcare occupations.

Alexander said that the government is making immigration system faster and more convenient to attract new entrants who can contribute their skills for the growth of the economy while addressing labour market needs of the Canada.
