A lone parent who sadly lost family members, including her sister, her mum and eight nephews and nieces during the biggest recorded typhoon, is putting the government of Canada to the test in order for them to show how committed they are to speeding up the process of applications that they have received off the Filipinos who were left devastated by the aftermath of the horrendous storm.

Typhoon Haiyan caused over 5,000 people to lose their lives and left millions seriously injured. The storm, which happened in November 2013 began on November 2nd and continued until November 11th.

The single parent who lost a large number of family members to the typhoon, is hoping it will be possible for her to move her daughter to Canada along with her niece, who became an orphan through the storm, so that she is able to support them and take care of them. The girls are currently still in their disastrous hometown, health concerns for the daughter and niece are amongst the contributing factors as to why they should be granted permission to migrate to Canada.

An announcement was issued in the middle of November, by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) they announced that processing applications from Filipinos who had personally and significantly been affected by Typhoon Haiyan would be prioritised, the CIC also announced that they were going to put an extension in place, this would allow a longer duration of stay for any Filipinos who were already living in Canada on a temporary basis.

A problem has arisen, although Nenita Yap originally migrated to Canada via the program for Temporary Foreign Workers, it is only permanent residents relatives and relatives of Canadian citizens who are able to migrate under the family stream. Permanent residency has been applied for by Nenita Yap, however as of yet she has not had approval of  the application.

Nenita Yap is receiving free help from an immigration lawyer, they are hoping that a positive decision is made as soon as possible regarding the daughter and orphaned niece, an application has been made which requests for Nenita Yap be legally allowed to adopt her niece, with the adoption yet to be confirmed and finalised it is unclear whether immigration will be granted or not, but the Canadian government seem to be showing vast amount of commitment and support to the entire situation.
