Canadian citizens
In the month of February 2014, more than 19,200 people from 193 countries have turned into citizens of Canada at the citizenship ceremonies, which is nearly 100% above in comparison with the same period last year (February 2013), when about 9,980 people had become the citizens at the citizenship ceremonies.

During last month, in Canada, school gymnasiums, city halls and conference rooms of hotel, citizenship and immigration offices were chosen as the venues to conduct 220 citizenship ceremonies across Canada intending to welcome the new citizens.

The high number achieved demonstrates that the system is attaining more efficiency and the piled up work on the citizenship applications is decreasing, serving more number of people to realize their dream of becoming Canadian citizens. The proposed changes by the government in Bill C-24, an act that aims to strengthen the Canadian citizenship application measures and system will reduce the delay time by implementing an efficient decision making process for citizenship. It is anticipated that the proposed changes will bring down the average processing time to under 1 year and that the present backlog will be decreased by more than 80 %, by 2015-2016.

Here are the facts:

  • 128,936 people were granted citizenship in 2013, an average of 10,745 every month.
  • Till now, in 2014, 41,000 new citizens have been welcomed by Canada at 462 ceremonies held throughout Canada.
  • Canada has maintained the highest levels of immigration since 2006, at an average of 257,000 foreigners each year. Accordingly, the demand for citizenship rose by 30%.
  • Canada has the highest rate of admitting the foreigners to the citizenship of its country. According to this statistics, 85 % of eligible permanent residents were granted  citizenship. In 2013, Citizenship and Immigration Department of Canada received 333,860 applications, the highest ever recorded.
  • The new Canadians make their formal entry into Canadian family through a/the citizenship ceremony. This is an occasion when the responsibilities, privileges, rights and the benefits of being a citizen of Canada are formally reflected upon.
