Happy Couple Canada

The minister of citizenship and immigration Canada (CIC) made an announcement last year,  that as of January 2014 the Canadian government were going reopen the previously diminished sponsorship of parents and grandparents for Canadian citizenship. Reopening of the visa option came with many dramatic alterations, a cap has now been put in place which limits the amount of applications which will be successfully processed. The citizenship and immigration Canada has confirmed that the acceptable level of parent and grandparent admissions would be no more than 20,000 during the whole of 2014.

The changes which have made to the program aim to reduce and eventually clear the increasing backlog of applications, reducing the duration of the processing time. One important requirement now in place is that in order to be a successful candidate to make sponsorship to a parent or grandparent, the applicant must have a minimum income which is to be assessed 30% over the low income cutoff (LICO). Another financial requirement is that the applicant must provide evidence of their tax assessments off the Canadian revenue agency, this is to prove their income over the 3 years prior to making an application. The duration of the sponsorship has also seen alterations, the citizenship and immigration Canada have now placed an undertaking of twenty years, it was previously on ten years.

The meaning of “dependent” is expected to see a decrease in age, any child named as a dependent can not be above 18 years old, the exemption I still in place which is for a handicapped or medically dependent child. The newly defined “dependent” requirements are to be enforced in all of the categories regarding immigration applicants. The proposition of age decrease is yet to be confirmed.

It is unclear at present as to how the dramatic changes will impact the family class  sponsorship program, some feel a few of the new changes may prevent some families making an application, which could lead to Canada losing out on having a vast amount of highly educated, graduates of university from overseas, along with their parents who may not want to migrate without their child, if the child is 18 or over. Allowing educated graduates into Canada, helps to boost the economy in the long term. Immigration plays an important role to Canada's growing economy and strengthens the social security for Canadian citizens.
