Canada Makes Access to Canadian Citizenship for Minors Easy

The Canadian Government has a deep commitment to encouraging all immigrants, including such minors, who are below 18 years of age, for acquiring citizenship. For making it easy, the fee required for minors to apply under subsection 5(1) of the Citizenship Act, stands reduced.

In June 2017, with the royal assent of Bill C-6, a legislative amendment, removed the requirement of 18 years of age, to apply for receiving citizenship, under subsection 5(1) of the Citizenship Act. This facilitated the minors to submit an application for citizenship in their independent capacity. Acquiring Canadian citizenship is a strong factor for successful integration into life in Canada.

The Honourable Minister of Immigration, Ahmed Hussen, made an announcement, regarding the changes are done, in the fee schedule, required in the Citizenship Regulations, to reduce the fees from $530 to $100, for processing, meant for minors, who apply under subsection 5(1) of the Citizenship Act. With this, it was brought in line with the processing fees for minors under subsection 5(2).

This made sure that there was no difference in the fee paid by applicants who are minors, not considering whether they have a Canadian parent, or apply with a PR parent, or apply in their independent capacity.

Individuals who paid the $530 fee before now for a minor for an application under this subsection after June 19th, 2017, will receive a reimbursement of $430. IRCC will contact the applicants directly to define the process to receive the refund.

Minors, without a Canadian parent, or a PR parent who apply for citizenship simultaneously as them, can apply to become citizens under subsection 5(1) of the Citizenship Act. The reduction in this fee will benefit more minors, immigrant children figuring in the child welfare system, or living in state care to seek Canadian citizenship.

The department will mobilize provinces and territories, agencies engaged in childcare, immigration service provider organizations and others, to create an awareness regarding this change. The department will inform these institutions on the methods to assist minors to get the citizenship.
