Canada leads the way for immigration says OECD

A new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has revealed that Canada has become one of the most attractive destinations for immigrant workers.
According to the OECD, Canada's immigration flow is amongst the highest of all the member countries and is increasingly being seen as a nation who provides a host of opportunities for international workers.

Rising number of immigrants

Canada has tightened its immigration criteria in recent years but despite this, has also created a 'safe list' of countries whose residents' applications can be fast-tracked for approval.
Canada News About Immigration

Canada has recently been in the news about immigration

There is an official target range of between 240,000 and 265,000 permanent new residents every year but this doesn't count temporary workers or foreign students who flock to the bilingual country.
2010 was a year which saw record numbers of immigrants arrive with 281,000 permanent new residents approved. In 2011, the numbers eased slightly but there were still 249,000 permanent new residents, in addition to 98,400 foreign students and 190,800 temporary international workers. And of course, those foreign students may ultimately apply to remain in the country once their education is complete, upping the numbers further.
The OECD says that Canada has one of the highest recorded inward flows of immigrants, standing at 0.7% of the population.

Skilled labour force

In the past, having a high number of immigrant workers in the country meant a reputation for holding increased levels of unskilled workers but studies have repeatedly proven this is a myth.
The International Migration Outlook report from the OECD rubbishes these reports once and for all, demonstrating that many immigrant workers are highly educated and take up skilled positions in the labour market.
In Canada, more than half the immigrant workers have attended further education and take up professional posts. In addition, a 'significant proportion' of foreign students attending Canadian universities decide to remain in the country, adding to the educated international worker community.
The World Economic Forum ranked Canada as the 7th most efficient labour market in the world, a statistic which demonstrates the labour market mobility that many workers find when they arrive. The OECD report said that Canada has the third highest employment rate for immigrants across all its member countries.

Immigrant worker stimulate economic growth

Canada is renowned for being welcoming to workers from overseas, and one of the reasons for this is that it recognises the benefits gained from having a strong immigrant population.
This is important not only in terms of the labour force contribution, but also to society overall.
Without taking immigrant residents into account, the Canadian population between the ages of 20 and 44 would be in decline, thus putting pressure on the economy. This is the age bracket who buy houses, has children and also contributes the most to taxation revenue. With numbers topped up by immigrant residents, the economy receives a much-needed boost.
In 2012, two thirds of the population growth in Canada was due to the arrival of immigrants, with a large percentage of these additions being in the critical 20-44 age bracket. Some experts have suggested that it is exactly for this reason that the housing market in Canada has remained so resilient despite the global economic fragility.
These figures go some way towards explaining just why Canada is as dependent upon the arrival of overseas workers and residents as they are on entering into the country.
