International students might once again have an easy time to become residents of Canada. All thanks to the new Canadian government which is headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had earlier pledged to create a much more welcoming immigration program.

This significant change will allow the students to count every day spent at the university as half day towards their physical presence need of citizenship for one year. The change that affects anyone who is on a work or study visa as a temporary resident.

Another change will slash the physical presence need for the permanent residents who apply for the citizenship to 3 out of 5 years instead of 4 out of 6 years.

According to the Canadian Immigration Minister, John Mc Callum, the important point is that he wants to assist foreign students to become permanent residents because Canada requires immigrants.

Another hope for changes in the Express Entry System might also be done. Before the start of the Express Entry System, the foreign students had a straight route to apply for the permanent residency. After completing the education, student can apply for post graduate job permit and after that student can apply for PR through Experience Class. Depending on your job experience, student can also apply for residency through other programs like Skilled Worker Program.

Canada avails around $8 billion yearly from the foreign students through living and tuition expenses, so the modifications must be good for the nation, for students. Around 51% of foreign students had planned to apply for PR in the year 2014.

Canada is also a favorable destination for Asian students. Canada had witnessed around 33% of foreign students from China, 12% from India and 6% from South Korea in the year 2014.
