December 18th was the International Migrants Day and Canada celebrated it with the international community.

Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development were present on the occasion.

The ministers issued a Joint Statement and said that this day served as an opportunity for remembering the contributions, rights, and requirements of all migrants in the world.

The ministers also said that History has seen that migration was a way for people, to conquer all adversities and seek a better life. Based on 2015 figures, there are 244 million migrants in the world, and one-tenth of them have an age below 15 years.

Hussen is an example as his parents were forced out of Somalia and he arrived in Canada as a teenager in 1992, to reside with a family.

The statement added that Canada was known for having a proud practice of welcoming immigrants, and one-fifth of Canadians were born abroad.

Migrants make a great contribution towards the identity and prosperity of Canada and forever increase the cultural diversity, and richness. They make the labor force skilled and fresh and work zealously in innovation making a contribution to the economy.

The ministers commended the orderly and safe migration and said that the country needs to continuously protect human rights, of migrants and do away with all types of discrimination against girls, women, and mistreated minorities.

Canada has an ambitious new multi-year immigration levels plan, to settle nearly one million, fresh immigrants between 2018 and 2020, which was introduced by Hussen in November.  A noted guest observed that “It is an important day and we must consider the role played by immigrants in making Canada a great success story. The future depends on the talents and contributions made by immigrants.”
