Canada Building Unions Support Hiring Foreign Nationals

Supporting its stand to encourage highly skilled professionals in the construction sector, Canada’s Building Trades Union (CBTU) has put forward recommendations before parliamentary committee to review the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).  The recommendations aim to hire foreign nationals in highly skilled occupations of the construction sector.

According to Bob Blakely, the trade unions operating officer, Canada’s demographic cannot balance workforce needs of the construction industry. It doesn’t have enough people to work in high-skilled trades of Canada. Outages and shutdowns have become common issues of the Canada Construction industry.

Citing the incident of the plant closure in Fort McMurray, Alta, Bob said that the plant was shut down for 42 days for maintenance. Getting the plant back into operation is tough without the help of highly skilled foreign nationals.

Profiles of the US and Ireland citizens will be assessed for the highly stressful jobs in the construction sector. Presently TFWP is being reviewed HUMA committee; the committee consists of 10 members, three Conservative MPs, six Liberal MPs, and one NDP MP.
