Canada-Bill-C-6-Passed
On the eve of 19th June 2017, the C-6 Bill got parliamentary Royal Assent in the capital province of Canada, Ottawa.

The Bill C-6 is an act to amend the Canada’s Citizenship Act. The bill was officially passed into the law on Monday evening. The law enforcement would fast-track the transition to the citizenship process for the desiring present and future immigrants to Canada.

Though the bill has been amended into a law from the immediate effect it would take some time to get all the measures into effect. One such requirement is related to the number of residency days that an immigrant needs to fulfill before applying for the citizenship – from 4 out of 6 years to 3 out of 5 years. This residency related implementation has yet to come into effect although the CIC and the federal government of Canada have plans to implement it. Other major changes outlined under the C-6 are:

  • Dual Citizens residing in Canada who are facing charges of treason, spying or terrorism will now be prosecuted as per the Canadian justice system.
  • Candidates who intend to work or stay outside Canada for professional or personal reasons now no longer required to submit an official document to continue to reside in Canada on obtaining citizenship.
  • The age requirement to obtain the citizenship has been abolished.
  • The Dependent Children under the age of 18 years can now apply for citizenship without a Canadian parent.
