Canada Begins Initiatives for Family Reunification of Protected Persons
The Canadian Government is making it simpler for immigrant nationals with protected person status along with their family members who are residing abroad to apply for Canada PR.

Refugees, Immigration, and Citizenship Canada (I.R.C.C) believes that a protected person is someone who has a sincere reason to fear persecution in their origin country. It could be due to religion, race, and membership in a social group, nationality, or political opinion.

Oftentimes protected persons and their dependent family members living overseas in dangerous situations. I.R.C.C states this makes it challenging for immigration officials to reach family members during the Canada PR application process.

Two Initiatives by IRCC

To address these difficulties, I.R.C.C has put in place two latest initiatives:

  • A centralized process of intake that will enable protected persons with their dependent family members overseas to submit PR applications for themselves and also for their family members simultaneously at a particular location, the I.R.C.C Case Processing Center in Mississauga.
  • A one-year Centralized Joint Processing Pilot that processes the applications for Canada PR for both the protected person and also their abroad dependent family persons at the same time.

This latest centralized process will enable the protected person in Canada to communicate with I.R.C.C on account of their family members, I.R.C.C announced in a news statement.

Family members need to be residing in a nation and within the areas of responsibility for the offices of migration that are engaging in the pilot:

  • Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • Bogota, Colombia
  • Lima, Peru
  • Kingston, Jamaica
  • Nairobi, Kenya
  • London, England
  • Port of Spain, Trinidad
  • Mexico City, Mexico
  • Sao Paulo, Brazil

Those who presented an application for Canada PR on or later 4 December 2019, and whose members of the family are in abroad and also in one of the listed engaging regions, will be suggested if they are suitable for the pilot.

Candidates must satisfy the eligibility and admissibility criteria it includes medical screening and security checks and criminal checks to be eligible.
