Canada Live-in Caregiver Program
The citizenship and immigration minister of Canada, Chris Alexander, announced notable amendments to the Caregiver Program that recognizes the significant contributions made by the caregivers to families and economy of Canada.

Alexander stated that reforms to the program include providing two ways for qualified caregivers to attain permanent residency in not more than six months. According to the new reforms, caregivers are not required to live in the home of their respective employer.

Additionally, caregivers in various health care professions such as registered nurses or psychiatric nurses, nurse aides, patient service associates, licensed practical nurses, orderlies and home support workers will be eligible to apply for permanent residency. Also, qualified caregivers in this field will be able to gain work experience either in providing in-home care or health-care facility either to an elderly or a person with chronic or disability medical condition.

Sources said that this pathway gives more options for qualified caregivers and focuses on workers in professions who are likely to face acute labor shortages in future. Also, applications in this field will be processed in not more than six months.

He added that Canadian Government is serious about minimizing the backlog rate of applications for permanent residence through the Live-in Caregiver Program. The country is planning to welcome 30,000 new permanent residents in this category as part of the 2015 level plans. Minimizing backlog rates and processing times will apparently help qualified caregivers to be reunified with their families very soon.

It has to be mentioned here that caregivers who have already filed their work permit applications in Live-in Caregiver Program and all who have applied based on employer’s approved Labour Market Impact Assessment that are submitted before 30 November 2014 will be able to finish their work requirement on a live-in basis and file an application for permanent residence.

Alexander stated that the government has taken this decision to enhance the Canada’s Caregiver Program to reduce the concerns of caregivers across the country. These reforms will protect caregivers and minimize family separation. Also, through these reforms caregivers will have more options to obtain permanent residence and will gain access to the tools they need to attain success in the labor market.
