In order to offer world class education to mid career professionals and post-secondary students, Chrystia Freeland, Canada's Minister of foreign affairs has announced that the Canadian government would invest $10 million over a period of five years.

It is reported that almost 12,000 students were enrolled in Canada from all the ASEAN countries. The ASEAN countries include 10 member states which are Cambodia, Brunei, Laos, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand. Minister Freeland met the senior officials and foreign ministers of these ASEAN countries during the two-day conference as he announced about the scholarship on August 6 at the ASEAN regional forum in Philipines and Manila.

Minister Freeland said in her statement that “Canada welcomes all the students from ASEAN with open arms. Offering quality education to these young people will inspire them and at the same time, they can be real agents of economic and social change in their countries and communities. These young people's contribution in the Canadian classroom will also enrich the experience of their generation and would also prove to be an important part of Canada's multicultural society”.
