Canada Announces One-year Transitional Measure to Temporary Foreign Workers in Alberta

Canada introduces 1-year transitional measure to temporary foreign workers
The Employment Minister of Canada, Jason Kenney announces a transitional measure to give a grant of execution to few workers in Alberta working in the TFW (Temporary Foreign Worker) program till their permanent residency applications being processed.

The federal government announced new regulations in June barring employees from recruiting temporary overseas nationals with low-wages in those regions for which the unemployment rate is more than six percent and making employers to limit the number of overseas workers they recruit at 10 percent by 2016.

Reportedly, 1 April 2015 is the last date for employers under the program who have been in the province from 2011 or prior to this period to leave the nation as per the criteria of new Labour Market Impact Assessment.

Sources stated that the Employment and Social Development Canada will offer a one-time exemption to workers from being counted under the cap on low-wage workers foisted on employers if they meet the criteria. In addition to this, Citizenship and Immigration Canada is offering a one-year bridging work permit to temporary overseas workers who are subject to the cumulative period of four years.

Apparently, this move will help employers who have TFWs and have already lodged an application for immigration and are in the queue waiting for their applications being processed.

The transitional measure is applicable to workers who have filed applications to the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program by 1 July 2014 and who hold a work permit that expires in 2015.

Notably, there are 10,000 workers on the waiting list for residency.
