The UK has told India that the bond scheme which would see UK visa applicants requiring £3,000 bond his unlikely to be finalised at this time. A senior Indian diplomat has made the statement that there will be no immediate move to bring in the bond idea.
Bond Scheme on Back Burner
The Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Jaimini Bhagwati was speaking at a reception held in his honour this week and stated that he had taken up the issue with the UK government and that the point was made that the bond was designed to prevent fraud but that it was not clear how the bond would help. He felt that the bond would not be brought in at this time.
The scheme had originally been planned by the Home Secretary Theresa May, but this week Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader and Deputy Prime Minister stated that he did not support the idea. He was also backed by Indian officials who raised strong objections.
