The 457 visa, allows a skilled worker, to arrive in Australia for working in a nominated occupation, for the approved sponsor, for four years.

The aim of the new visa is to strengthen the quality and integrity of temporary and permanent employer-sponsored Skilled Migration Programs in Australia. Its implementation began in April 2017 and would be completed in March 2018.

The numbers of persons who transitioned to either the 189 or 190 Skilled Visa, also decreased. There was a 30 percent increase among the students who transitioned to a 485 temporary graduate visa. This visa is meant for global students, who have completed their graduation, recently, from an educational institution in Australia.

Many Australian universities like NSW, Deakin, Queensland, and Canberra witnessed an increase in the enrolment of Indian students during 2017.
