Celebrating Australia Day
A vast number of people came together to celebrate the national holiday of Australia. Australia day consisted of the traditional beers and bbqs along with events which are slightly unusual such as pineapple throwing and bull riding. The celebrations saw some magnificent events, such as, the annual ferry race in the famous Sydney Harbour, the largest display of fireworks which takes place in Perth and the spectacular parade which includes over 60 community and cultural groups, the parade  takes place Melbourne's main streets.

17,900 Australians who were involved in the celebrations were there for reasons beyond the public celebrations, they were there to receive certificates which for the first time make them Australian citizens. Although wet weather was predicted and could of caused the day to be a disaster, it was not the case, the harbour foreshore was  packed out with revellers from New South Wales (NSW) wearing yellow and green face paint, others waving flags.

Thousands of visitors came to the city to join the Sydney-siders in their celebrations which is notorious for being a lavish event. 2014's parade had entertainment lined up which was expected to last around 14 hours, thought by some to be the biggest parade in Sydney since the bicentenary. Sunday morning saw Aboriginal celebrants light a fire at the Sydney Opera House,  the flame and various other items from different locations around the world were put on to a boat. The boat then set off to the harbour bridge where the traditional smoking ceremony took place.

Australia day has been used by political leaders express their views on issues like immigration and indigenous rights. Health specialists, politicians, cultural identities and sporting greats are amongst honour recipients who have been expressing their gratitude.
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, has been named Honorary Australian of the year. He has made suggestions that working rights should be made easier for Australians who are in the British capital and vice versa.

There are a large number of Australian born people currently living in London and they bring a lot to the city. They make up a large dynamic community which has been established for a long time in Earls court. Mr Johnson feels that now is the time to to introduce an ease for migrants between London and England and Australia, he suggested bringing in a free labour mobility zone, this would in theory reduce the time an applicants would wait for a visa to be granted.
