Australia's Skilled visa program
Michaelia Cash, Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection in Australia has declared an Independent review for Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) program on February 25, 2014.

She said that the announced Independent review is part of their election commitment. The review has undergone certain changes during the recent years.

Michaelia Cash said that the ‘457 program’ supports the employers in the industries and also the areas which are undergoing skill shortages. Additionally, this program has high potential in contributing to the productive growth of the Australian economy. Thus, if the necessary importance is given to this program, the announced review of the quality of the program has to be ensured in view of the reforms.

Minister Cash also said that the review will aspire to provide suggestions on how to enable the integrity of this visa program, while undesired administrative burdens are replaced or are discontinued.

She averred that this has come along with the commitment of the government to bring about positive and evident reforms in productivity.

The 457 program will be reviewed by an independent panel which will have the members related to industry, migration and government, depending on their expertise and experience.  Mr. John Azarias, a retired public servant, who has tremendous knowledge of migration will lead the independent panel.

The final report will be provided by the independent panel to the Assistant Minister by the middle of 2014.

Michaelia Cash has additionally stated that the panel will also be holding an investigation on the key aspects of the 457 program such as non-acceptable rates among sponsors, as well as the existing acceptable burdens on employers.
