Applications for Parents and Grandparent Programme Close

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) announced that applications for Parent and Grandparent Programme (PGP), have reached the maximum number of applications this year.

This Parent and Grandparent Programme allows Canadian residents to sponsor their grandparents or parents to reunite through the immigration programme. It was a despair for families who have been waiting to reunite.

It reached the intake cap of 5,000 within one month, the programme was reopened this January after two years. Now again, this programme is closed for a minimum of one year.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada, restarted accepting applications for PGP from 2nd January, promising to take 5,000 new applications for this year. The Canadian government committed to welcome 20,000 new grandparents and parents to Canada, by taking 15,000 remaining applications from the existing backlog.

CIC had stopped accepting applications for the immigrations sponsorship programme from 5th November, 2011, due to the long processing time and backlog of applications. Ever since, CIC has been planning to reduce the backlog and started an action plan for faster family reunification.

Approximately 50,000 grandparents and parents are admitted as Canadian permanent residents in the year 2012-2013.

CIC commenting on closing the programme, said that it has received 5,000 applications, and new intake into PGP will be paused till next year.

By the end of this year, CIC planned to welcome an additional 20,000 grandparents and parents to Canada, making major reductions in wait time for processing the applicants.

Chris Alexander, Citizenship and Immigration Minister said, Canadian government understands the value of spending time with loved ones and family members and devoted improving the immigration system so the families can come together more quickly.

Applicants who were unable to apply for the 2014 programme are encouraged to consider the Super Visa that provides grandparents and parents of Canadian permanent residents and Canadian citizens with a visa that is valid up to ten years and allows to visit Canada for up to 2 years without renewing their status.

Every month almost 1,000 applications are accepted, on an average 87% of application are approved.
