Alberta Wants Ottawa to Lift Cap on Number of Immigrants
In a bid to address the growing labor needs, Alberta (Canadian province) requested the federal government to raise the cap on number of permanent residents it can nominate over each year.

The minister of jobs, Ric McIver stated that Alberta has sent a letter to the minister of citizenship and immigration Canada (CIC) Chris Alexander urging Ottawa to remove the cap on the acceptance of provincial nominees, which helps them to bring the workers they need.

He added that the province will continue to experience the shortage of 96,000 skilled workers by 2023. He mentioned that the complete quota of Alberta attributing for 5,500 certificates have been issued under the 2014 immigration nominee program.

Apparently, the certificates will permit semi-skilled and skilled overseas employees together with their dependents to be nominated by the Alberta for permanent residency in the country. However, the ultimate decision on whether to issue permanent residence for applicants will be taken by the CIC.

McIver stressed that the allocated quota is not sufficient enough to fulfill the Alberta's prevailing job needs. He added that removing the cap on the acceptance of number of provincial nominees would help Alberta’s economy across the board, including beef, tourism and energy sectors.

Reportedly, the Federation of Independent Business of Canada called Ottawa to substitute its notorious temporary foreign worker program with a visa that would pave the path for permanent residency for overseas entry-level workers. The firm said such visa would help to fill in labour shortages for minor businesses.
