A Labor Force Survey In Canada Demonstrates Employment Gains In Provinces
Quebec and Ontario were the leading provinces that registered employment gains in December. There are many facts in the latest Labor Force Survey conducted by Statistics Canada. During December 2019, 57,000 more employees gained an employment in the Canadian private sector. The increase was in food services, construction, accommodation, but other industries had little change.

Employment grew by 25,000 in the foodservice industry and accommodation and there were major gains in Quebec. Furthermore, in Ontario and British Columbia construction accounted for an increase of 17,000 jobs.

From December 2018 to 2019, the country employed 320,000 persons. Also as comparison Employment rates increased at a fast pace than observed in 2018. There was growth in the first three quarters, mainly in full-time work, registering an increase of 283,000 workmen.

The unemployment in Canada was at a record low in 2019 touching at 5.4 percent in May.

Provinces and relevant statistics


25,000 persons were additionally employed in December doing full-time work mainly in the construction and public administration.

In comparison in December 2018, Ontario jobs grew by 243,000 related to full-time work, and 227,000 more positions were filled up. There were increases in professional, scientific, technical, and health care services and also in social assistance.


In Quebec, employment increased by 21,000 positions. There was a decline in the unemployment rate by 0.3 points and it was 5.3 percent.

Yearly figures illustrate that Quebec employment increased by 63,000 and mainly the growth dealt with full-time work.


Manitoba added 2,800 jobs in its labor force mainly in part-time work for of 15 - 24-year-old workers. Unemployment had a decline of 0.6 points and stood at five percent between Nov and Dec 2019. Moreover, compared to Dec 2018, the rate of unemployment had a decline of one percent.

Prince Edward Island

This province added 1,100 jobs in December. The unemployment rate was unchanged and stood at 7.9 percent. There were 4,600 additional jobs in the province, chiefly in the construction sector.

Nova Scotia

In 2019, employment increased by 6,700 in the province and there were leading gains in manufacturing, health care, and social assistance sectors. More than 50% of job growth was taken up by young persons. The unemployment rate stood at 7.9 percent in December.

New Brunswick

This province had an increase of 5,000 jobs in the past year. Many persons were employed in the age group of 55 years and above. In Dec 2019, 25% of the provincial labor comprised of people above the age of 55 years.

The sectors of employment growth were Construction and public administration. The rate of unemployment had a decline of 0.9 % and remained at 7.5 percent in 2019.

Newfoundland and Labrador

This province had a yearly decline in employment by 5,900 mainly in health care and social assistance. The rate of unemployment remained at 11.8 percent in December 2019 and was the same as in December 2018.

British Columbia

There was little change in 2019 here and the unemployment rate remained at 4.8 percent.


Employment remained unchanged in Alberta as per the figures on a yearly basis. Very few people worked full-time and there was a demand for part-time work. The unemployment grew by 0.6% and standing at seven % in Dec 2019.

The employment level as well as the unemployment rate were unchanged in the people aged 25 -54 years


Employment unchanged in Saskatchewan in 2019, and the Unemployment was at 5.7 percent.
