52 Percent of Canadians Supporting Same or Increased Immigration Levels

Higher than 50 percent of Canadians state levels of immigration should either stay the same or rise, as per the new survey.

The Angus Reid Institute poll shows 39% think that the 331,800 immigrants Canada projects to welcome in 2019 is about right. A further 13% feel that the number should rise. On the other side, 40% of respondents support a reduction in immigration levels.

The poll comes between a hotly contested general campaign on the election, with the vote fixed for 21 October 2019.

Justin Trudeau, Canada PM is aiming for re-election with a strategy for careful immigration progress in the following three years, to 350,000 per each year by 2021.

A Municipal Nominee Program and removing the application fee for citizenship will be foundations of the Liberal Party’s policy of immigration if they win the forthcoming election.

Results of the Latest Survey

The survey also unveiled the confusion and notable misperceptions about the number of newcomers that Canada welcomes, and where they arrive from.

One of the most surprising outcomes was that two-third of Canadians think most of the immigrants come from North Africa and the Middle East region. The real figure is simply 12%.

Canadians also overvalue the refugees' percentage in the nation accepts by double while miscalculating the economic class immigrants number significantly, the Angus Reid Institute states.

The significance of irregular border crossers arriving in Canada from the US was also a notable finding. Some 56% said the Liberal party government has been too simple on asylum seekers, while only 26% say the on-going problem has been managed well.

The latest numbers show irregular border crossers surpassed 2018 levels in the last 3 months, after falling off significantly at the beginning of the year.

More than 60% of respondents told new immigrants can speak either English or French, while 38% were cheering for them to learn later arriving.

On the immigration file, more respondents (28 percent) believed the Conservative Party leader named Andrew Scheer was the most qualified person for the job. Trudeau was second with 22% of the vote, and N.D.P leader Jagmeet Singh came third, with 18%.
