10,000 Sponsors to Submit Applications via the Parent and Grandparent Program, Canada

Submit Applications via the Parent and Grandparent Program, Canada
The actual figures for sponsored parents and grandparents to come to Canada will be around 17,000 as many applications include multiple family members. The 10,000 invited to submit an application by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have 90 days to submit their completed application and any required documentation.

The deadline is July 24, 2017, and the application must include taxation, employment/wage, and civil status records. All invited have been directly contacted and those who have not been selected this time have been notified and can indicate their interest in the program once again in 2018.

The 10,000 were selected from a pool of around 95,000 individuals who have expressed an interest to sponsor their parents and/or grandparents to move to Canada with them. The application form was available until February 2nd.

The Parents and Grandparent Program (PGP) was previously a first come, first chosen a program. But it was judged to be unfair as applicants were going to great lengths to be first to deliver their submission to IRCC. The program consistently has a much higher application rate than places available. For 2017, the number of places was doubled from 5,000 to 10,000.

Canada’s 2017 Immigration Levels Plan aims to welcome 20,000 parents and grandparents in 2017 and works to clear a backlog of applications that have long exceeded places available. Canada has also committed to reducing processing times for the scheme.

No changes have been made to eligibility requirements for the PGP scheme. Sponsors of parents and grandparents for the PGP scheme must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident over 18, must meet a minimum level of income and supply proof of the past three years of said income. The income of a partner must also be included and proven.  The sponsor must commit to and sign a sponsorship agreement to declare they will provide financial support for those they are sponsoring. The eligible relatives must make every effort to be self-supporting. Sponsors must also agree to repay any social assistance benefits paid to the sponsored relatives for 20 years in all provinces except for Quebec where it is 10 years.
