Live in Hong Kong

Live in Hong Kong

Many people choose to live in Hong Kong because it offers both a thriving business environment plus a desirable and safe place for children to grow up.

You will need to live in Hong Kong for 7 years before you can apply for permanent residency but despite this relatively long eligibility period, there is still a thriving expat community.

How is life in Hong Kong ?

Finding affordable accommodation to live in Hong Kong isn't very easy because of the sheer number of residents packed in to a relatively small space. Hong Kong is one of the most densely packed placed on the planet.

But even though it is an expensive place to live, it is possible to reduce your costs by picking somewhere outside the central regions. Kowloon offers a great compromise and isn't far away but families may want to move slightly further out to the New Territories where it's possible to get a bit more space for your money.

Utilities are also relatively expensive; but if you switch off your air conditioning when you aren't using it you can save a fair bit of cash!

But not everything in Hong Kong is pricey; transport is easily accessible and very cheap. For this reason, owning a car is an unnecessary expense.

Eating out is also very cheap and many people opt to regularly dine in restaurants rather than cook at home. The reasons for this could be twofold; not only is eating out a very economical option – cheaper than buying groceries! - but many people simply don't have the facilities in their accommodation to cook a decent meal.

One of the reasons grocery shopping is so expensive is that everything has to be imported. You will however be able to choose between familiar western brands and local Chinese food.

But even though some things are undeniably more expensive when you live in Hong Kong, there are other financial benefits which can cancel out the cost. Income tax in Hong Kong is very low, starting at just 2% for individuals earning less than HK$40,000. Even for those earning more than HK$120,000 the top rate of tax doesn't exceed 17%.

For this reason, it's worth considering what your net income will be when you calculate the cost of living because although you might have higher expenditure, you will also be bringing home more of your pay-packet too. You will have to become familiar with the taxation system if you live in Hong Kong because unlike other places in the world, you will be responsible for calculating your own taxes.
