Life is safe in Hong Kong

Whether you have obtained a temporary or a permanent visa into Hong Kong you will still go through the same transition process and adaptation will be the same for all migrants who enter if there to stay or not. There’s certain things which you can benefit a great deal from for knowing in advance and things which many brochures or internet pages omit to mention. As they say, forewarned is forearmed…..

Being safe in Hong Kong:

Hong Kong has a strong and vigilant police force and thus a relatively low crime rate but by no means does that mean that no crimes occur, they certainly do, serious crimes are not so high but crimes such as pick pocketing are rife and you must be aware of this at all times, especially when using public transport or being in crowded areas. City centres are heavily patrolled by the Hong Kong police force and there are very very few violent or serious crimes here especially. You can walk the streets much more safely than in other countries.

City Centers on a whole. Many shops, apartment buildings and entertainment facilities also employ their own private security companies to be extra vigilant against crime. Hong Kong simply does not have any ‘no go areas’ and the entire country on a whole is considered safe with crime not a huge concern. You should always, however, be extremely wary of your belongings at all times and in all places.

Hong Kong, like anywhere, does have drugs and poverty and these things drive people to steal so ensure you are not a victim of petty theft. The safety advice from the police force is regularly distributed out as reminders but is fairly basic, things such as locking up when you leave your accommodation and never leaving valuables in view.

Road safety in Hong Kong:

Being a major country of business there is a significant amount of congestion on the roads and especially at peak times, collisions and crashes is around 16,000 per year though the fatality rate is immensely lower than that of other countries. For example in the UK over 23,000 people suffered serious injuries in road traffic accidents last year and 1,800 people died from their injuries. In Hong Kong on average 120 road accidents result in fatalities which shows that the roads here are a lot safer. To get around public transport is hugely accessible and fairly cheap. Taxi’s can be flagged down with ease and cost a lot less in comparison to European prices. Public transport such as trams, predominantly, are the cheapest way to get around. Hong Kong also have a strict no eating policy on public transport and so everything is very clean and hygienic.
