Health in Hong Kong

Health in Hong kong

Migrating to any country will leave you with many questions and much uncertainty. Rules, laws and public services differ in many ways around the world, what goes in your native homeland may not in your migration destination for example. A huge concern, especially for those migrating with children is what is the health care like?

Hong Kong has a world class Health Care system and their population is amongst the healthiest people in the world, with one of the longest life expectancies! For example, women in the United Kingdom currently have a life expectancy of 79 yet in Hong Kong that age is 86 - a significant difference of an extra seven years!

All hospitals in Hong Kong, whether public or private, are equipped with the latest in medical technology and equipment and have only expertly trained doctors working to extremely high standards. For this reason, health care costs here are very expensive.

If you do not opt for private medical care as a migrant and therefore have to use the public Health Service you will be charged a much higher amount that Hong Kong citizens. There is no NHS over here, if you need treatment you do have to pay for it.

There are many English speaking doctors which can make everything a little less stressful for you if you are migrating from an English speaking country but these doctors will charge higher rates generally.

If you have a Hong Kong Identity Card then you are entitled to receive subsidised medical treatment, however if you do not then the likelihood is that you will be paying the same for public health care than you would expect to pay for private treatment.

You are highly unlikely to build up any kind of a relationship with a Doctor the reason being that it is most improbable that you will ever see the same Doctor twice, Europeans can find this strange who tend to have a life long relationship with a family doctor who will enquire after aging relatives and remember minor details for a more personal service, there will not be that in Hong Kong.

There are health concerns in Hong Kong which those, again especially with children, should be aware of and the main one is the high, condensed pollution here. The government to address this on a regular basis but as of yet have found no way round and thus consistently fail the World Health Organization’s safety standards.

The pollution will undoubtedly aggravate any breathing conditions you or your family have such as asthma or respiratory diseases and even the healthy migrants will suffer things such as chest infections, sore throats and sinus problems.
