City focus: Hong Kong, China

A small island with a complex history, Hong Kong is the home of many high tech industries, including manufacturing and engineering works. Often seen as the gateway to China, the city is home to many international corporations and an excellent place to live and work, or visit with a Hong Kong tourist visa.

Under British control until 1997, Hong Kong retains a strong European influence, and tends to welcome immigrants more than mainland China. A Special Administrative Region, Hong Kong has a different political system from mainland China, and the Hong Kong immigration process is different, too.

Hong Kong's population

One of the most densely populated areas in the world, Hong Kong is truly a city that never sleeps. Modern skyscrapers are a few streets away from traditional buildings and historic temples. The main language spoken in the city is Cantonese. English is an official language and is used by many of the multinational businesses that have flocked to the city. English is spoken by approximately a third of the population as a second language while Cantonese is spoken by around 90% of the population. It's an advantage to speak both, but either language may be worth Hong Kong immigration points.

The gateway to China

Geographically and culturally a gateway between China and the rest of the world, many visitors come to discover Hong Kong and stay to explore China further. Hong Kong tours provide an excellent way to visit the mainland. In economic terms, Hong Kong's status as a Special Administrative Region encourages companies from all over the world to set up shop here, and many more travellers visit to do business. Hong Kong companies are often middlemen, providing a cultural and linguistic translation service that allows the rest of the world to do business in China.

High tech city

Hong Kong city
Of course, Hong Kong has many attractions in its own right, and Hong Kong immigration is a popular choice for many Indians. It's a key financial centre and has low taxation and its own, strong, currency. A former manufacturing centre, it's economy is now driven by services, including financial services, IT and other professional services. As a result, the Hong Kong immigration process tends to favour skilled immigrants who can slot into the existing economy. Entrepreneurs and investors are also welcomed.

Life in Hong Kong

An island in southern China, Hong Kong is hilly and surprisingly green for such a well developed country. It's a humid, almost tropical climate, with hot, wet summers and mild winters. It's climate is similar to coastal cities in northern India, like Kolkata. Hong Kong has a high standard of living, demonstrated by residents having one of the longest life expectancies in the world. Excellent education and healthcare systems make this a good choice for immigrants with families. A city of contrasts, Hong Kong is home to both areas with great historical and natural beauty, as well as a vibrant, ultra-modern, down town area, popular with tourists and residents alike.
