Criminal activities come with substantial consequences, the effects cause serious turmoil to the victims and their family members. The after effects can also cause great concern to the society in which the crime was carried out. The Canadian government are fully aware that keeping track of the changes in occurrence, the intensity of the crime carried out and the nature of the crime is exceptionally important in order to formulated methods and procedures to minimise the crime rate in Canada. The Canadian government dedicate various resources so that they can implement the services for victim support, policing, court and correctional facilities. Reports of crime to Canadian police has decreased immensely since it hit quite a high in 1991, statistics show that in 2012 Canada had its lowest crime rates since 1972.

The highest reports of severe crimes typically come from north and west of Canada. The seriousness of crime stayed the same or decreased in most of the Canadian territories and provinces, except in Nunavut an Manitoba where they experienced a slight inflation. There was a noticeable increase in the amount of break-ins in the two territories which is what caused the increase in police reported crimes. The biggest decrease in criminal activities was seen in Alberta and  British Columbia where there was a joint decline of 16 %. 

Violent crimes reported to the Canadian police decreased 3% in 2012 from the previous year, the polices services proclaimed there was approximately 9,000 less violent incidents reported. The decrease in violent crimes was at the lowest rate it has been at since 1987. although the overall crime rate showed a great decline from 20011-20012, Canada saw an increase of violent crimes in cases such as extortion, offences resulting in death (not homicide), sexual violations towards children, firearms offences and several more. In 2012 Canadian police reported around 540 homicides, 55 less than those reported in 2011. the reduction saw a 10% fall making this the lowest since1966.

The most frequent violent crime in Canada is assault, over half of reported offences of violence is that of assault. Assaults are split into 3 categories decided upon the severity of the incident, 3 being extremely severe, 1 being minor. All categories of assault claims saw a decrease in 2012 in comparison to those reported in 2011. level 1 assaults, although not as serious as level 3 was predominantly more common, dropped by 20%  compared to 10 years previous.
