Canada Calling, Opportunities Galore

Canada Calling
Ranked as one of the best countries in the world to live in, Canada offers a host of opportunities for people who wish to immigrate. The country has the highest per-capita rate of immigration in the world, accepting some 250,000 new permanent residents each year. Canada has one of the most immigration friendly policy frameworks, driven by the need to fill the gap in work-force. However, like other countries, Canada is seeking skilled and qualified immigrants who can be productive members of society.

Tens of thousands of immigrants land in Canada every year seeking to join the labour force and create new economic opportunities for themselves. What works to Canada’s distinct advantage is that, with a population of 34 million people, the country remains highly under-populated, for all its vast land mass.

However, in spite the large numbers of immigrants who land in Canada every year, media reports suggest that between now and 2021 a million jobs are expected to go unfilled in the country. Despite political viewpoints otherwise, experts believe, Canada needs to radically boost immigration numbers.

Calling high-skilled immigrants

The challenge, however is to ensure that the right people are attracted to settle in the country. Policy makers believe that with the right people, Canada will surge to be a world power in innovation driven growth. They fear that without high-skilled immigrants, Canada will drain away its potential.

However, reports suggest that, the federal government plan to revamp the immigration policy seems inadequate, to meet this challenge.

For every senior citizen today, there are 4.2 working-age Canadians who make contributions to cover retirees' pensions and health care. But by the year 2031, this ratio will be cut in half. Such a demographic scenario poses grave implications for the economic life-cycle of the country. It means the tax base will shrink; economic growth will slow, further squeeze on labour and its shortage.

Supporters of a liberal immigration policy argue that, immigrants not only fill the gap in manpower and workforce shortage, but they also participate in the economic cycle by paying taxes and spending money on housing, transport and consumer goods. They point out that the productive capacity of the community increases, leading to a ripple effect across the economy.

Experts agree that immigration cannot completely cure Canada’s problems, but they argue that, it can help to alleviate the symptoms.

Opportunities for Indians

The emerging scenario in Canada opens up new opportunities for Indian seeking to migrate to the North American country. The momentum has already been created.

According to recent figures, India was the third largest source country for immigration to Canada in 2012, with 28,889 permanent residents admitted. This represents an increase of almost 15 per cent since 2004.

Figures also indicate that in India, Canada issued a record 130,000 visitor visas in 2012. This is an increase of 58 percent compared to 2004. It also issued a record 13,000 study permits approved represents an increase of 530 percent since 2004.

“For over a century, Canada has benefited from the talent and hard work of newcomers from India,” [then] Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney was quoted in the media saying.

“About 750,000 Canadians can trace their ancestry to India, and now a growing number of Indian citizens are able to visit family and friends in Canada, study at Canadian colleges and universities, or immigrate to Canada as permanent residents.”

This significant increase in Indians receiving the Canadian visa reaffirms the country is a top destination of choice for visitors and students from India.
