96 New Canadians Kickoff Their Citizenship

In the evening of November 1, 96 new immigrants were welcomed in the Canadian family at Rogers Centre as they stood in the centre field for reciting the "Oath of Citizenship" to kick off the start of the Toronto Argonauts Montreal Alouettes game. This event was led by Russ Jackson, member of the Order of Canada and the Canadian Hall of Fame. Taking part in the celebration, many of the 20,000 viewers also repeated the "Oath of Citizenship" along with  the new citizens to reaffirm their commitments and duties to Canada. This citizenship ceremony was hosted in partnership with Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

To organize such ceremonies across the country, the CIC and the ICC always work together and try to add unique roundtable discussions where all community members participate to lead conversations with new citizens on what it means to be Canadian.

This event was organized by ICC Co- Chairman , the Right Honorable Adrienne Clarkson and John Ralston Saul, the Citizenship and Immigration Minister of Canada, Chris Alexander was represented in this event by Roxanne James, MP for Scarborough Centre and also Parliament Secretary to the Public Safety Minister of Canada Steven Blaney with help from some notable Canadian persons such as Zaib Shaikh, ICC Board Member, actor, writer and director, George Cohon, Founder of McDonalds, Canada and Mark Cohon, the famous Commissioner of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Executive Chairman and CEO of Toronto Argonauts, Chris Rudge said, "This evening, 96 new citizens to our country took their Oath of Citizenship and thousands of Argos fans in the stands nearby reaffirmed their own citizenship, while standing on a Canadian football field and sharing in an experience that is uniquely ours. Through community programming and investment, our club has actively invited new Canadians to learn about a game, a team and a league that is part of the cultural fabric of our country. On behalf of our entire organization and our fans, I am very proud to welcome all of those who joined us tonight and I would like to thank our partners at both the Institute of Canadian Citizenship and Citizenship and Immigration of Canada for entrusting us to host."
