Visa to Australia

Visa to Australia

For the vast majority of individuals from overseas, visiting Australia means it will be necessary to acquire a visa before attempting to gain entry.

There are many ways to get a visa to Australia: family, employer-sponsorship, essential skills or investment for example, but regardless of which route you choose you will be required to sign and agree to the Australian Values Statement.

The Values Statement is something contained within both the temporary and permanent visa applications but although there are some small differences the core and essential meanings in both types of visa to Australia.

Any individual completing the application for a visa to Australia will be required to confirm they will not just obey the laws of Australia during their stay, but will also respect the values of Australian society.

The application form states that the Australian Government actively encourages any individual interested in living in the country to find out more about the country, its people and also their way of life. Indeed those applying for a permanent visa need to confirm they have read the required material.

There is a lengthy description of what is defined as the values of Australia but some of the integral aspects include equality, mutual respect, compassion, tolerance, a right to dignity, religious freedom, democracy and commitment to the rule of law.

A visa to Australia requires any individual aged over 18 to sign their agreement to these values.

A permanent visa to Australia has a few more requirements in terms of values than a temporary permit.

To start with, the declaration is separate from the rest of the application plus it carries the requirement for the individual to have read the documentation recommended by the Government. This covers life in Australia in far more detail and expands on the Values as described by the visa application.

If you want a visa to Australia on a permanent basis and are considering becoming a citizen in due course, the application also explains what will be required. The additional rights which are required by becoming a citizen – such as voting – are a reciprocal arrangement which means the individual may be required to perform duties such as jury service. The visa application also makes it clear that by becoming an Australian citizen, allegiance to the country and its people would be compulsory.

A visa to Australia is more than simply a permit to enter the country; it is a contract which requires the individual to confirm they will respect the rules and way of life of the nation and will adhere to its values whilst within its boundaries.
