Relocate to Australia

Relocate to Australia

If you are planning to relocate to Australia, you will no doubt wondering exactly how to organiZe the move and what to do first.

Although you might have many things you want to achieve before you relocate to Australia, there are some matters which are essential to consider. The list below runs through some of the considerations which you should make sure you have thought about before you step onto the plane to relocate to Australia.

Get your visa in place to relocate to Australia

Possibly the most crucial of all that you do, without a visa in place you won't be able to relocate to Australia

There's lots of different ways in which you could potentially qualify to relocate to Australia, you may have close family in the country, you might be sponsored by an employer or perhaps you feature on the Skilled Occupation list.

The last is a list of roles which are particularly valuable to Australia and anyone holding one of those positions is far more likely to succeed with their application to relocate to Australia. The occupations on the list vary widely and change annually but include everything from architect and engineering manager through to primary school teacher and also manual professions such as plumber, plasterer and electrician.

You might find it easier to look for a job at the same time; this could help you with your visa application. Check out the Jobs Wanted section of any trade magazines you subscribe too and keep your eye out for any job expos which are being held. You might even be able to relocate to Australia to a branch of your current employer.

Find a roof before you relocate to Australia

When you are ready to relocate to Australia you need to start looking for a place to stay once you arrive. You can always book some temporary accommodation but that will get quite expensive very quickly and of course you will have the dilemma of what to do with all your belongings once the freight company ships them over.

It's therefore essential to find a more permanent abode. Do your research in advance by checking out the various areas in the region you want to live so you are ready to hit the ground running once you arrive.

The boring stuff to relocate to Australia

Whilst it's quite exhilarating looking for a new job and house, you need to make sure you have covered off the not-quite-so-exciting tasks too.

Getting your documentation in order may be tedious but you will be glad later on that you took time to get organised. As a rough guide, you need to make sure you have the following safely stored in a file:

• birth certificate
• marriage certificate
• academic qualifications
• international driver's licence
• employer's reference

There's plenty more things you could add such as your police check certificate (essential for a visa) and bank references but the above is the bare minimum requirements. All the documents need to be originals and if they aren't in English you will need certificates of translation.

This is also the perfect time to sort out a new bank account in Australia; you can open one in advance of arrival. This will allow you to transfer some funds ready for the big day so you won't find yourself penniless in a foreign land.

Let everyone know!

This may sound like an obvious task but with so many organisations and people to inform it's easy to overlook someone important.

This checklist should give you a hand:

• your doctor and dentist – don't forget to ask for copies of your records to take with you
• the DVLA
• your employer – make sure you allow plenty of time to cover your notice period
• your bank
• utilities companies
• The Student Loan Company – they will need your Australian address so you can arrange to continue paying what you owe
• Post redirection
• your family and friends!

Plan future communications

You may have been wanting to relocate to Australia for many years but when it comes to the big moment, there's bound to be a few tears for the family and friends you are leaving behind.

The upside is that modern technology can help you stay in touch and whilst it's not quite as good as the real thing, Skype and other forms of video communication can help you forget there's half a world between you.

Talk to your family and friends about future communications before you set off and make sure you check that those important to you but who may not be familiar with computers have the necessary accounts set up and know how to use them before you relocate to Australia.
