Live in Australia

Live in Australia

You may have always dreamt of a move abroad but if you are lucky enough to get the chance to live in Australia you could just find that you need to adjust some of your preconceptions.

Depending where you are moving from, the climate could come as a bit of a shock; having a fortnight in the sun may be enjoyable but when the heat is present more or less all year long (such as in some of the hotter parts of Australia) it may not be quite as welcoming.

However, by far one of the biggest hurdles that many new arrivals have to overcome is the presence of snakes and spiders in the country. If you are going to live in Australia and be happy, it's essential to be able to deal with either a spider or a snake safely and not spend your entire time scanning the horizon in fear.

Common phobias:

Snakes and spiders both rank very highly on the list of common phobias and in Australia, unlike other places in the world; it's wise to be cautious. The country does indeed have both venomous snakes and spiders but becoming acquainted with both the preventative protocol and what happens if the worst occurs is highly recommended.

Although this may make it seem like to live in Australia would be traumatic, it's really only a shock when you first arrive and many people quickly acclimatize.

Spiders are generally far less commonly-seen than many people think when they consider whether they could live in Australia and a can of bug spray is usually all you need. Snakes are even less common but can be a bit more difficult to remove!

Know the dangers

Of course, it's a good idea not to be too complacent when you live in Australia and learning how to recognize a venomous spider could save a trip to the hospital with a nasty bite.

The easiest way is to look online; there are plenty of websites which offer a simple guide to identifying your eight-legged visitors.

If you live in Australia, knowing which spiders – and let's not forget snakes either! - represent a real danger could not only help you avoid getting bit, but will mean you get the right medical treatment more quickly if the worst does happen.

Australia has successful anti-venom for all native spiders and there has not been a death in the country due to this since 1979.

To sum up, whilst it certainly doesn't hurt to educate yourself, if you choose to live in Australia, don't ruin your time by being paranoid about creepy crawlies and snakes. The chances are you will see one only very infrequently and when you do; dealing with them should be a cinch.
