Notably, several cities in Australia rank high on the liveability survey, released by the Economist Intelligence Unit recently. According to the survey, Melbourne, is ranked the worlds' best most liveable city, a position it has retained for several years. Other cities of Australia, which rank in the top 10, include Adelaide, Sydney and Perth.

Immigration to Australia

Immigration trends recently released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveal field data on the attractiveness of Australia for international migrants, particularly from India.

ABS data shows that, people of Indian origin are one of the fastest-growing ethnic communities in the country. According to statistics, in 2011-12, Indians were the largest source of permanent migrations to Australia. The data says, around 360 Indians arrive in Australia each week seeking permanent settlement in the country. The data shows that this year, up to August, almost 19,000 people of Indian origin arrived in the country. This figure is three-fold increase compared to the same period in 2012.

Meanwhile, compared to India, New Zealanders, who have unbridled access to the country, are the largest number of arrivals in Australia over the last year. ABS points out that, Australia received some 26,170 New Zealanders, this year, which is in fact a decrease of 4000 on the previous year.

People migrating from the United Kingdom (UK) are another significant segment of Australia's population. However, data shows that the arrival of people migrating from the UK has actually decreased over the last year. According to ABS, the number of people from UK seeking settlement in Australia has decreased 15,790 in 2011-12 to 11,450 this year.

Another major segment of Australia's ethnic international migrant population, are people of Chinese-origin. The release by ABS shows, a slight increase, in the number of, Chinese migrants to the country with the figure reaching 18,240, this year.

Other migrant ethnic groups include people who arrived from Philippines (7270), Malaysia (3810), Vietnam (3630) and Sri Lanka (3580).

However, this data released by the ABS does not include people on temporary visas, such as students and skilled workers on the 457 program.

Data released by the ABS and trends in international immigration to Australia show the continuing attractiveness of the country for people seeking to migrate, from across the world.
