Eligibility and Pathways to Acquire an Australian Permanent Visa

Eligibility and Pathways to Acquire an Australian Permanent Visa
An Australian PR (Permanent Resident) is a foreign citizen who holds a permanent visa to reside, study or work in Australia without any restrictions. However, an Australian permanent resident will be not be granted all rights which an Australian citizen is entitled to.

Eligibility to apply for a permanent visa

  • Any foreign citizen is eligible to apply, after residing for two years in a specified regional area of Australia and worked or has been self-employed for at least one year in these same areas.
  • Any foreign national who obtains sponsorship under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, is eligible to apply.

Specified Regional Areas

By applying for a Skilled Regional Sponsored (provisional) visa, you would have agreed to live and study or work in a specified regional area of Australia along with the secondary applicants (if any) incorporated into your application, which will be identified based on whether you are being sponsored by an eligible relative residing in that specified regional area of Australia during sponsorship or nominated by a participating territory or state government. You should agree to live in a metropolitan area with low population growth or in a regional area.

Types of Permanent Visas you can apply for

But, if you have obtained a provisional work visa and are aspiring for permanent residency, then you can apply for a Specially Designed Regional (Residence) visa (subclass 887).
  • The skilled regional sponsored (provisional) visa (subclasses 475 and 485) holders and skilled-Independent Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 495) holders, are now able to apply for a Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme Visa (subclass 857) with minimized eligibility requirements.
